On 19 July 2018, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) issued a consultation paper on the new guidelines for CRAs (Credit Rating Agencies) that need to be followed when they periodically report to the Authority. The first consultation paper, which initially contained the basic rules for the CRAs for their periodic information duties, was published in March 2015 and was supposed to help ESMA carrying out its supervisory tasks. Since supervisory needs and processes have greatly increased since 2015, ESMA is giving new indications to CRAs on how to perform their duties in a manner that can be more of use for the Authority. The revised Guidelines aim to achieve a more efficient and effective system that will introduce greater proportionality in their reporting requirements, as well as greater predictability in their supervisory interactions with ESMA.
