The European Commission presented a legislative proposal that could strengthen the protection of all those who inform the public of possible violations of EU Law. The proposal comes after many scandals - from Dieselgate to Luxleaks - broke out in the recent past on the back of revelation of non-public documents or information. The proposed directive will offer protection in many areas of EU Law: public procurement, financial services, terrorist financing, food and transport security, environmental protection. According to the legislative proposal, which must be approved by the Council and the Parliament, public administrations and companies will have to adopt internal procedures to deal with any informants. Currently, informants are protected by specific laws only in 10 EU countries out of 28, including Italy.
