Mario Draghi does not consider bitcoin a currency and thinks it is not “the responsibility of the European Central Bank” to regulate it. The president of the ECB explained this by answering some questions on cryptocurrency as part of the initiative #AskDraghi, on Twitter. Mario Draghi does not consider bitcoin a currency for two reasons. The first is that “the value of bitcoin has strong fluctuations” and while the currencies have “behind the central banks of their countries and their governments”, this does not happen for the Bitcoin. However, Draghi has been said to be “very interested” in blockchain technology, called “promising”, as it allows to make some processes “faster”. Draghi used the example of an invoice that must be made “instantly and automatically when it is received”. In the light of these considerations, this new “promising technology will probably support the economy and create many benefits”, even if much more needs to be done.
