On 1st October, 2019, the Director-General of the WTO, Mr Roberto Azevêdo, attended the meeting scheduled and organized by the German Chancellor Angela Markel in Berlin. The meeting concerned specific points that the Director-General wanted to address for the future of the planet. Specifically, DC Azevêdo tried to put on the discussion table the issues relating to international cooperation and multilateralism, which result to be strictly connected with the aimed results of the improvement of the means and prospects for sustainable growth. The heads of the ILO, IMF, OECD and the World Bank also attended the gathering. DG Azevêdo mainained: “There is no doubt that the current trade tensions pose a huge challenge to the entire international community. They are having real economic effects. Our trade forecast for 2019 has been revised down to 1.2%. As recently as April, the projected growth figure was 2.6%. In everyone’s interests, we must work to improve prospects for global trade. Strengthening trade multilateralism is essential, and the WTO is taking action”.
