The Republic of Korea donated a new contribution for developing and least-developed countries (LCDs) by endowing a sum of KRW 417 million (approximately CHF 350,000) in order to allow LCDs to participate with more weight during global trade negotiations. The donation has been done by endowment of the sum to the WTO’s DDA Global Trust Fund and the Fund will commit to sponsor and finance training workshops for government officials. This kind of operation is considered to be helpful so that the same officials will be able to deepen their understanding of multilateral trade rules and strengthen their negotiating capacity with increased knowledge. The DDA Global Trust Fund was created in 2001 and, since then, it has been able to organize over 2,800 workshops, such as the ones above described. Director-General Roberto Azevêdo maintained: “Korea’s donation will help developing countries and LDCs voice their positions more effectively in trade negotiations. This will in turn contribute to economic growth and sustainable development in their countries. I thank Korea for its generosity.”
