On April 2nd, 2020, after the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has updated its report on risk assessment on the basis of the recent global sanitary emergency, which created various difficulties even on European markets. European markets were already evaluated on the market risks but the pandemic caused multiple variations on equity markets, leading to their large corrections since mid-February, that has been seriously damaged and further increased also by a sharp deterioration in the outlook for consumers, businesses and of the economic environment, which is being strongly influenced by the COVID-19. Equity markets are not the only one involved in recent changes on the European economic scenario: specifically, corporate bond, government bond markets and a number of investment funds show large signs of stress. Market infrastructures have continued to function in an orderly manner despite significant surges in trading activity, the use of circuit breakers and increases in derivatives margins. ESMA in now foreseeing a long period of risk to institutional and retail investors of market corrections and very high risks across European Markets.
