On March 31st, 2020, the heads of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a joint statement in order to urge the governments of the member states to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 crisis in relation to border restrictions on trade in food. This statement was issued taking into account that many people around the world, and in different areas and countries, actually depend on international trade for their food security and livelihoods. As countries move to enact new provisions in order to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to put all the efforts for the minimization of potential impacts on the food supply or unintended consequences on global trade and food security. As it was stated by the agency heads in the statement: “Now is the time to show solidarity, act responsibly and adhere to our common goal of enhancing food security, food safety and nutrition and improving the general welfare of people around the world.”
