In May 2019, many of the UK’s largest banks and construction companies signed a voluntary code in which they commit to reimburse fraudulent customers, except when customers have been negligent. However, according to the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR), it appears that many banks are currently taking a restrictive approach to their obligations to repay fraudulent customers. According to the Authority’s data, the most generous bank has fully repaid the 6% of its customers and partially 93% of them (only 1% of the repayment requests have been rejected). On the contrary, the less generous bank fully repaid only the 1% and partially the 3%, while it rejected 93% of the repayment requests. This news is not optimistic and for this reason the Authority asks for a modification of the code.
