On 24^th-26^th June, 2020, WTO members discussed on the possibility to insert a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Declaration in occasion of the 12^th Ministerial Conference which is supposed to be held next year amongst WTO members. The aim of the Declaration would be that of addressing the problems connected to the international agri-food production and trade, and specifically safety and health standards that need to be regulated. In particular, those who maintain the necessity of this Declaration have noted that the COVID-19 outbreak underlined the importance of coordinated responses to global crises by all members in order to avoid the fact that different standards prevent a synergic approach. The goal would also consist in linking together the political approach that would be achieved through a Ministerial Declaration and the technical aspects touched and studied by the SPS Committee, which is currently in charge of the study of other subjects such as pest control and sustainability.
