On October 1st, 2020, a specific Working Party held a meeting on the accession of Timor-Leste to the WT Organization, which it bid for recently while stating that this new cooperation with the organization could lead the country to the implementation of its economic and life standards. Generally, all members showed their support on the bid and the following accession of the new country before and during the meeting, which took place in a particular way considering the difficulties the outbreak of the pandemic caused. For example, the delegation of Timor-Leste was speaking from the capital, Dili, and the Working Party chair, Ambassador Rui Macieira of Portugal, from WTO headquarters. In addition to this, the delegation of Timor-Leste stated that his country is also committed to joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and is working to ensure that these two accession processes can both advance while the government should invest on domestic laws and regulation reformation. The Chief negotiator maintained that: “Timor-Leste prioritizes WTO membership, as it would help to leverage the on-going improvements in its infrastructure, human capital and administrative capacity, and to accelerate growth and economic diversification.”
