In accordance with what stated by General Council Chair David Walker of New Zealand on October 28th, 2020, the most likely individual to be selected as the new and 7th WTO Director-General, after having held many consultations with active members of the organization, is Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria. Mr Walker maintained that ‘She clearly carried the largest support by Members in the final round and she clearly enjoyed broad support from Members from all levels of development and all geographic regions and has done so throughout the process.’ He then declared that he would have recommended her name as the new Director-General that should remain in charge until August 2024. The United States though expressed a different opinion and maintained that they would not back the candidacy of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala while they keep appointing Minister Yoo. The General Council chair also stated that since the process to replace former Director-General Roberto Azevêdo began, the ultimate aim of this selection process has been to secure a consensus and he hopes this consensus can be saved.
