The French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Recovery organized a Webinar on December 7th, 2020, on A new standard for a new capitalism: accelerating corporate responsibility through non-financial information during which several important speakers were supposed to participate. Specifically, there Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery, Olivia Grégoire, Secretary of State for the Social, Solidarity and Responsible Economy, Mairead McGuinness, Commissioner for Financial services, financial stability and Capital Markets Union, Amparo Lopez Senovilla, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Spain, Members of the European Parliament and other representatives of the public and private sector. In particular, the webinar provided a speech from Stevan Maijoor, Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), who argued about three characteristics of sustainability reporting which he deems paradoxical. In particular, he argued that there often are two conflicting needs about reporting: they need to be international and jurisdiction-specific at the same time. Furthermore, he observed that the system requires both the rigidity of disclosure standards and their flexibility to allow different realities to coexist. Eventually, the system provides a general discipline in order to comprehend the largest number of companies while focusing on providing special disciplines for smaller companies.
