In order to help developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) to have access to agricultural trade, the government of Sweden decided to donate to Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) the sum of 40 million (approximately CHF 4.2 million) over the period 2020-2023. This specific donation would help LDCs to achieve and respect international standards, both from a legislative and factual point of view; on the one hand, legislation has to be updated and, on the other hand, it has to be implemented by local companies with specific concern to international food safety, animal and plant health standards. These kinds of interventions are no news for Sweden, which during the years has always supported the growth of LDCs. Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Trade Anna Hallberg stated that: “For Sweden, international trade is the key to development, and I am happy we are able to continue our long-term commitment to developing countries by supporting the STDF. It is an important part of our support within the broader framework of Aid for Trade to further integrate these countries so that they fully benefit from the possibilities presented through global trade.”
