On January 26th-27th, 2021, the WTO’s Committee on Trade Facilitation held its first meeting of the year and it discussed thoroughly on the effects of the pandemic outbreak both in the private and public sector, as well as the possibilities and real experiences on how the exchange of medical goods, such as pandemic-related medicines and equipment, can be implemented. One of the proposals on how to ameliorate the situation came directly form the European Union which asked the WTO Secretariat to draft a specific document listing the contributions of COVID-19 responses that members and observers have provided to the committee. The aim of such proposal is to understand and hopefully solve the various difficulties that businesses meet while exporting medical goods; these results would help to find a solution for the pandemic situation. The outcome of the proposal was non shared among all members; some shared the concern and the possibility to proceed that way. Several others worry about duplicating work already being done in the World Customs Organization or using the compendium as the basis for possible recommendations.
