Following an investigation launched in 2018, Facebook’s European headquarters Ireland imposed a € 225 million fine on Facebook-owned WhatsApp for violating E.U. data privacy laws and more specifically for not having fulfilled its transparency obligations regarding the communication to users on the use of data as it would not have sufficiently informed E.U. citizens about what is done with their data, and how they are shared within the company. WhatsApp returns the disproportionate sanction and has already communicated its intention to challenge the decision.
