In order to stimulate the EU’s autonomous supply of materials needed for the production of key technologies, the EP calls for diversification, more extraction and national recycling to achieve a better and improve digital economy. Critical Raw Materials (CRM) are crucial for the production of a wide range of goods and applications. The transition to highly energy efficient and climate neutral digital economies will lead to significantly higher demand for CRM, as technologies that require them, such as batteries and electric motors, will be really important. In the text, MEPs ask for an EU strategy that increases strategic autonomy for the supply of CRM, by building a secondary market with recycled resources. The new raw materials will have to come from within the EU, the sources will have to be diversified and research on sustainable alternatives will have to be intensified. MEPs also ask EU countries to consider strategic storage.
