On February 23rd, 2022, the WTO held the General Council meeting during which the Chair of the Committee on Trade and Development (CTD), the Ambassador Muhammad Mujtaba Piracha of Pakistan, asked for the advancement of the discussion with the Organization for the WTO’s Work Programme on Small Economies that was established on the basis of a mandate from the Fourth WTO Ministerial Conference held in Doha, Qatar, in November 2001. In his speech, the Ambassador focused on the possibility of opening a preliminary discussion on small economies, specifically for what concerns the integration of such economies in the post Covid-19 era; this kind of work could help the members to plan a possible schedule for the process to proceed forward. During the meeting, also WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala referred his opinion and stressed the importance of finding solutions that will assist small economies adjust to the major challenges related to climate change and other unique structural constraints that make it difficult for them to fully benefit from international trade.
