One month after the Russian attack on Ukraine, the EU Parliament unanimously condemned the brutal invasion and urges the EU to further sanction Russia and protect the European economy. On 10th 11th, March, 2022, the was a plenary debate with the President Michel and President von der Leyen on the informal Summit in Versailles and the subsequent European Council held on 24th 25th March 2022, MEPs praised the rapid response of EU countries and the adoption of unprecedented sanctions against Russia immediately after the attack. The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that "if freedom has a name, its name is Ukraine and the Ukrainian flag is today the flag of freedom". The severe sanctions are already hitting hard and it is necessary to drain the resources Putin is using to finance this war. Most MEPs agreed that the EU needs to strengthen its strategic autonomy in defense and energy matters, and should do so quickly. Noting how EU imports of Russian gas are indirectly financing the Russian attack on Ukraine, they have supported diversification of energy purchases and investment in renewable energy. Many MEPs stressed the effects of rising energy prices on the economy and the risks to food security, and called for support for households and businesses.
