The Schengen Information System (SIS) is an IT system of the European Union used in the area of security and justice. It supports external border control and law enforcement cooperation in the Schengen States. It enables competent authorities to enter and consult alerts on certain categories of wanted or missing persons and objects, also giving them clear instructions on what to do when the person or object has been found. The SIS is now going to be reinforced by updating the existing rules. On 19th November 2018, the Council of the EU introduced new categories of alerts and also expanded the list of objects for which alerts can be issued. It also established that the alerts regarding entry bans for third-country nationals must be introduced into the SIS. Other innovations are the possibility of using facial images and DNA profiles for identification purposes and the possibility for Europol to have access to all categories of data in the SIS. According to its mandate, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency will also have access to the alert categories in the SIS. The Council and the European Parliament have now to sign the adopted regulations. After the signing, the texts will be published in the EU Official Journal and will enter into force twenty days later. However, the updated rules will become fully operational only after having passed all the required legal and technical checks.
