02/07/2019 - Fairness in the food chain: the Commission proposes to increase price transparency

Articoli Correlati: price transparency

The European Commission has presented a proposal that will make information available on how prices are determined while food products move along the food supply chain. The purchase and sale of price differences can provide information on intermediate costs (such as transport, insurance, storage, etc.) between seller and buyer. Greater transparency can support the best business decisions and improve confidence in the business. Although there is a large amount of information available on developments in agricultural markets (prices, production volumes, stocks, etc.), there is almost no market information on other key markets in the agri-food chain, those that operate between farmers and consumers in food processing and in the retail trade. This asymmetry of information between farmers and other actors in the food supply chain puts farmers at a significant disadvantage on the market. This lack of information on market developments by converters and retailers has been called the “black box” of the food chain. They are based on existing data collection systems and procedures used by operators and Member States to report market information to the Commission, with a broader scope. Each Member State will be responsible for collecting price and market data. Member States will communicate the data to the Commission, which in turn will make monitoring available on its agri-food data portal and on EU market observatories
