Articoli Correlati: right to repair - EU Parliament - consumer law

On April 7th, 2022, the EU Parliament adopted its demands on the Commission’s proposal on consumers’ ‘right to repair, expected by the end of 2022. The new proposal it is intended to promote more efficient and sustainable use of resources, waste reduction and wider use and reuse of products. According to MEPs, an effective right to repair should cover the life cycle of products, including design, fundamental ethical principles of production, harmonization of evaluation protocols and consumer information, including repairability labeling. In particular, MEPs demand that products be designed to last longer, to be repaired safely and that their components be easily removable. In addition, MEPs argue that an adequate right to repair would give industry and consumers free access to information regarding repair and maintenance. As for digital devices, application updates should be reversible and not lead to a decrease in performance, for example in smartphones. Furthermore, updates should be made available for a minimum period of time and consumers should be fully informed, at the time of purchase, of such availability.
