On July 20th, 2022, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s securities markets regulator, issued a number concerning the development of key retail risk indicators (RRIs) for the EU single market. Specifically, the article highlighted risks regarding inexperienced investors, in particular for what relates to the use of digital tools by younger investors who have more difficulties and spikes in overall trading during periods of market stress. In accordance with the new mandate that ESMA received concerning these matters, ESMA is building on existing consumer analysis and indicators from the Trends, Risks and Vulnerabilities Reports to propose a different framework taking under consideration various improvements to the discipline. The new framework shall provide definitions of key terms, considerations on how to measure risks practically; and identification of sources of risk for consumers.
