On October 4th, 2022, the EU Parliament approved new measures to strengthen the EU’s capacity to prevent and control the outbreak of communicable diseases and address cross-border health threats. In order to do so, the MEPs approved the agreement reached with the Council on the extension of the mandate of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) with the aim to strengthen the EU’s capacity to prevent, prepare for and manage communicable disease outbreaks. ECDC will work with the European Commission, national authorities, EU bodies and international organizations to ensure consistency and integration of all measures taken. To generate timely and comparable data, the Center will also coordinate the standardization of data collection, validation, analysis and dissemination procedures at EU level. Parliament also adopted another deal on a series of measures that will allow the EU to more effectively prevent serious cross-border health threats and react more effectively. The Commission is allowed to formally declare an EU-wide public health emergency and will foster greater cooperation within the EU, enabling the timely development and building up of a pipeline of medical countermeasures.
