On October 5th, 2022, the EU Parliament adopted a resolution in order to call for further emergency measures to ease the pressure on European households and businesses caused by rapidly rising energy prices. In the new resolution, MEPs say Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and weaponized use of fossil energy supplies have dramatically exacerbated the current energy market instability and led to an increase energy prices and a cost-of-living crisis. Furthermore, they warn EU countries that consumers who cannot afford higher bills should not have their energy supplies cut and underline the need to avoid evictions for vulnerable households who are unable to pay their bills and costs of the rent. Consumers should be better protected against suspension or termination of flat-rate contracts by suppliers and against huge pre-payments for gas and electricity. According to MEPs, exceptional times require exceptional emergency measures. In this sense, the EU must act as united as ever and all measures taken at EU level must be fully compatible with the Union’s long-term climate objectives.
